Fishing With Fbg OutfittersBy The Angling Report Newsletter, May 2008, page 12Dave Brydon has good things to say about the fishing he and his father experienced on the South Llano River in Texas this past August with Rick Wilson of Fbg Outfitters. Brydon fished near Fredericksburg, southwest of Austin, where he and his father caught approximately 100 fish during a one-day float. He says they enjoyed steady action on Guadalupe bass and Rio Grande “perch,” plus largemouth bass, bluegills and various sunfish. Brydon says the Guadalupe bass, a native species dubbed the “green trout” by early settlers, strikes like a trout, rising to look over a fly before taking it, unlike the largemouths that quickly shoot out to take a fly and head back to cover. As for the “perch,” these fish were actually cichlids that Brydon says stick their backs out of the water like a shark to chase and strike a fly. Brydon describes the Llano River as a small to medium-size stream with water so clear one can see the fish taking the fly. Because it is fairly open, Brydon says casting is easy and the South Llano River is perfect for beginner fly anglers. Rods from a 4- to 7-weight are sufficient to fish here. Wilson uses an inflatable raft to float this river. Brydon says it was very stable and easy for his elderly father to fish from. He gives Wilson high marks generally, describing him as capable, knowledgeable and experienced. The accommodations were in a small B & B overlooking a pond in the countryside outside of Fredericksburg.
